Spain: 'White Tide' rally floods Madrid streets to demand quality public healthcare

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday to demand quality public healthcare.

With signs and banners in defence of the public health system, the demonstrators marched from the Ministry of Health towards the central Puerta del Sol, passing in front of the Congress of Deputies.

“We urge this deaf and inefficient government that, for the good of everyone, primary care services must recover one hundred percent of face-to-face assistance,” said one protester.

The protests, popularly known as ‘White Tide’, have been demanding improvements in the Primary Care services for 92 weeks.

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “200,000 people do not have their health guaranteed, including thousands of children who do not have a paediatrician. It’s a shame, how can anyone support this nonsense?”

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “We urge this deaf and inefficient government that, for the good of everyone, primary care must recover one hundred percent of face-to-face assistance, assistance in the morning and afternoon shifts, covering nights, holidays and weekends, and immediately reopening the emergency services in Primary Care.”

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “We knew that the economic crisis carried a certain risk of worsening mental health. The risk grew with COVID-19 and, they did not take any measures to control or reduce this risk. On the contrary, they are reducing public services. Privatisation, in many cases, aggravated this reality.”
