It was just before dawn that Sri Lanka’s embattled president Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the island nation on a military aircraft bound for the Maldives.

Rajapaksa had finally agreed to resign on Wednesday but fled with his wife, leaving the army with specific instructions to keep order no matter the cost.

The President’s flight has only served to further infuriate Sri Lanka’s population amid chaotic protests that saw demonstrators break into his home.
