Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a speech from Ramallah on Wednesday, to mark the 17th anniversary of the death of former Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat.

“This anniversary comes and our just national cause is going through a very delicate stage, perhaps the most difficult in our struggle history,” Abbas said in the speech broadcast by the official Palestine TV.

He added “The Israeli occupation authorities have continued their colonial and racist policy, and launched a systematic aggression to change the historical status of Jerusalem, our eternal capital, obliterate its identity and Arab and Islamic character, expel its residents and seize their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan and others.”

The Palestinian President concluded by calling on “the international community to change its way of dealing with the Israeli occupation authorities, by moving from statements of condemnation and denunciation of violations The right of Israel to our people and our land has taken concrete steps.”

Arafat, who was the first Palestinian leader to reach a peace agreement with Israel in 1993, died aged 75 in November 2004.

SOT, Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President (Arabic): “This anniversary comes and our just national cause is going through a very delicate stage, perhaps the most difficult in our struggle history. The Israeli occupation authorities have continued their colonial and racist policy, and launched a systematic aggression to change the historical status of Jerusalem, our eternal capital, obliterate its identity and Arab and Islamic character, expel its residents and seize their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan and others, as well as preventing worshipers and believers from reaching the holy places in Al-Aqsa, the Ibrahimi Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.”

SOT, Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President (Arabic): “After 73 years of the Nakba and 54 years of aggression and occupation in 1967, and the reality of Israeli occupation, annexation and racism, and the continuous undermining of the two-state solution. It is time for the international community to change its way of dealing with the Israeli occupation authorities, by moving from statements of condemnation and denunciation of violations. The right of Israel to our people and our land has taken concrete steps, such as imposing international protection mechanisms, holding an international conference to end the occupation, recognising countries that have not recognised the State of Palestine, preventing Israel from financing weapons that kill children and innocents, and other practical measures.”

SOT, Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President (Arabic): “In our last speech before the United Nations, we expressed the hopes and aspirations of our people for freedom and liberation from this usurping colonial occupation, by setting a time limit for implementing the vision of the two-state solution under the auspices of the International Quartet, leading to the demarcation of the borders of the independent State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. If the occupation authorities do not respond, the reality on the ground will impose itself in one state with equal rights for all, or by returning to the partition resolution of 1947 that gives the state of Palestine 44 percent of the land, because it is not reasonable or acceptable for the occupation to remain on our chests forever, just as it is not reasonable for us to continue to abide by agreements that Israel does not abide by.”
