Members of the Salihiya family, who were evicted from their home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, gathered in temporary accommodation in northern Jerusalem on Thursday.
The family is forbidden to return to their home for 30 days after an Israeli court ruled their displacement was lawful. Israeli authorities evacuated and demolished the Salhiyah house on Wednesday morning following a court order.
Adel Salihiya, a member of the family, said “the Israeli army entered the house and beat the young men on the ground and assaulted the women and they were beaten. They brutally assaulted the young men, and took them out without clothes and shoes on their feet.”
Yasmin Salihiya, another family member, said “the hardest feeling is that I watch the 25-year effort of my father gone to waste and not return. The memories of my father at home, everything is related to us in that house.”
Members of the family are accused of violating a court order and creating a ‘public disturbance’, according to media reports citing Israeli law enforcement.

SOT, Adel Salhiya, Family Member (Arabic): “The Israeli army entered the house and beat the young men on the ground and assaulted the women and they were beaten. They brutally assaulted the young men, and took them out without clothes and shoes on their feet. My father Mahmoud is responsible for all the young men who were in solidarity with us. The Israeli officer said to my father, Mahmoud, that he will take you out of the house without shoes and with your head on the ground, but we told them no. My father left the house with his head held high, and all the citizens know that he came out with his head held high.”

SOT, Mahmoud Salhiya, Family Member (Arabic): “The Israeli army insisted that I watch my house get destroyed, they told me this is your house that was demolished, then we went to the court, the decision was postponed, then the appeal, then the appeal from the Central Court and the Public Prosecutor of the Israeli Police and I did not go out yesterday. Today was in Court, the central governor ordered my release on bail and prevented me from being in Sheikh Jarrah for a whole month.”

SOT, Yasmin Salhiya, Family Member (Arabic): “Everything is beautiful in the house since childhood, all our lives and our attitudes, steadfastness, we learned from our problems with the Israeli army from that house.”

SOT, Yasmin Salhiya, Family Member (Arabic): “The hardest feeling is that I watch the 25-year effort of my father gone to waste, and not to return. The memories of my father at home, everything is related to us in that house. Even the cats and animals that we cared for on the land, everything is gone.”
