State of Palestine: Hamas calls for support of prisoners in Gaza march

Several thousands marched through Gaza at a Hamas-organised demo to contest Israeli policies towards Palestinian prisoners, on Friday.

The protesters paraded through the streets with green Hamas flags and chanted demands for solidarity with Palestinian prisoners. Some participants released balloons with portraits of the prisoners.

Recently, a number of prisoners in Israeli jails had gone on hunger strike. As part of an upcoming agreement between Hamas and Israel, prisoners were supposed to be released. During the march, Hamas warned Israel against actions that could lead to an escalation of the situation.

SOT, Suhail Al-Hindi, Hamas leader (Arabic): “The message of the prisoners on this day in memory of Wafa Al-Aqsa, it was emphasised that the prisoners are a red line and we will work with every force to liberate them and soon, god willing, they will be liberated. This freedom, and they will soon meet with their fathers and mothers, and the resistance will soon achieve this victory, god willing.”

SOT, Yousef Ashraf, Member of Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza (Arabic): “We went out to say yes to the Qassam and yes to the shadow unit in the Qassam apparatus, which has held Gilad Shalit for more than five years and has maintained Zionist soldiers for more than seven years. Today, as we say to our brave prisoners, the Qassams, the Resistance, and the entire people behind you, god willing, we are on a date with a forthcoming loyalty deal.”
