A lightning bolt has hit the One World Trade Center in New York City as Storm Henri approached the US northeast.

The footage captures the moment the lightning hit the spire of the iconic Manhattan landmark.

Henri later made landfall on Rhode Island, flooding areas as far south-west as New Jersey before pelting Pennsylvania with more wet weather.

Hundreds of thousands of homes in the region without any power.
