Réunion Island’s Piton de la Fournaise volcano has erupted for the first time this year.

The eruptions began on the french island after more than 700 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, according to the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVP).

The eruptions created a new fissure at the southern flank of the central cone.

Residents were able to stay out of harms way, as it’s located in an uninhabited part of the island.
