Flooding, caused by heavy rainfall, has submerged parts of Tuti Island, along the main Nile River in Khartoum on Tuesday, destroying crops before harvest.

“All the farms were drowned on the first day of harvest,” said Abdullah Ahmed, a devastated local resident.

The Sudanese Flood Committee warned Khartoum residents to take precautions after the Nile River’s water level reached 17.10 metres (56 feet) on Tuesday, exceeding the flood level by 60 centimetres (23 inches).

Flooding has claimed the lives of 24 Sudanese this year across the country, according to official reports.

The Sudanese National Council for Civil Defence also estimated that 819 houses had been completely destroyed, and a further 1,572 partially destroyed since the beginning of the floods.
