The UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed his disappointment about the lack of meaningful progress following the sixth round of talks between the Syrian government, opposition, and civil society groups on constitutional reforms, speaking during a press conference in Geneva on Friday.
“I think it’s fair to say that the discussion today was a big disappointment. We did not manage to achieve what we had hoped to achieve, that we would have a good discussion on how to reach forward for some kind of a consensus,” said Pedersen.
The last round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee talks, which began on Monday, could ‘not produce any understanding on commonalities’ between the delegations that previously had agreed on a mechanism to draft the war-torn country’s new constitution.
Pedersen then said that if the parties themselves did not reach a consensus, he would not be ‘the one to conclude on their behalf.’
A date for the seventh round of discussions has also not been agreed upon yet.
