Members of the Syrian Constitutional Committee’s Small Body attended a sixth meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in Geneva on Friday.
The sixth round of talks aims to tackle the challenge of drafting a new constitution for the war-torn Middle Eastern country.
The recent round of the constitutional negotiations kicked off in the Swiss city on Monday and is expected to wrap up on Friday afternoon with a press conference by Pedersen.
Throughout the week, delegates participating in the Syrian Constitutional Committee’s meetings were reported to have drafted their papers with ideas on such topics as supremacy of law, sovereignty of the state, basic principles of the army and security forces. Officials from the Astana Troika - Russia, Turkey and Iran - also came to Geneva and held a series of meetings on the sidelines of the Syrian Constitutional Committee talks.
The Syrian Constitutional Committee was formed in 2019, comprising 150 men and women, with the government, the opposition and civil society each nominating 50 people. This larger group established the 45-member small body, consisting of 15 representatives from each of the three sectors. The previous fifth round of negotiations took place last January and ended up without any result.
