Switzerland: Syrian government, opposition blame each other for lack of progress in Geneva

Representatives of the Syrian government delegation and the opposition delegation, who met at the United Nations office in Geneva to try to reach an agreement on the future of Syria, announced on Friday that no solution had yet been reached, concluding the sixth round of talks between the parties.

Syrian government representative Ahmad Kuzbari said some of the opposition delegation’s proposals were “unfortunately completely out of touch with reality” and even reflected malicious ideas and hostile intentions.

Hadi Albahra, co-chair and representative of the opposition, countered that after 10.5 years of the ‘Syrian tragedy’, a momentum had developed that dictated the quality and nature of the solution.

The drafting process between Government and opposition Co-Chairs of the Syrian Constitutional Committee (Small Drafting Body) and civil society ended without a result, so that the UN envoy Geir Pedersen already expressed his “great disappointment” on Friday.

SOT, Ahmad Kuzbari, Co-Chair representing the Government of Syria (Arabic): “We listened to all proposals made by some of the participants, some of them were, unfortunately, completely detached from reality, and even reflect – in some of its aspects – malicious ideas and hostile agendas. Some participants even went further by legalizing the Zionist Entity, as well as justifying and supporting the illegal, illegitimate and unilateral coercive measures that played a direct role in impoverishing the Syrian people and deepening its suffering. Some expressed views that legitimatize the Turkish and US occupations of the Syrian territories.”

SOT, Ahmad Kuzbari, Co-Chair representing the Government of Syria (Arabic): “From the beginning of this round, our delegation has noticed that the other delegation persistently and relentlessly attempts to put obstacles in order to make this round fruitless, despite the diligent and patriotic work during the past week, and our effective contribution to make this round successful and fruitful. Nonetheless, our delegation confirms that we will continue to positively involve in the discussions of the constitutional committee in order not to impair the Syrian people’s sacrifices and principles. Thank you.”

SOT, Hadi Albahra, Co-Chair representing opposition (Arabic): “Unfortunately, the delegation representing the regime’s government hasn’t submitted any paper to be jointly agreed on, and insisted that there is not even one point in these documents (we submitted) to be agreed on, despite the fact that we included in our papers some proposals already included in their papers, that we thought it can be built on.”

SOT, Hadi Albahra, Co-Chair representing opposition (Arabic): “However, in order to reach results, it requires that the three parties presented here have the will to make understandings and reach a political solution. Unfortunately, until this moment, at least one party does not have this will, and no endeavors have been made to reach an agreement.”

SOT, Hadi Albahra, Co-Chair representing opposition (Arabic): “This constitutional process cannot go on if it remains the way it is now, if it does not receive international consensus, real support and will from all Syrian sides to realize a political solution that we all pursue, which is the only solution that secures the sustainable stability and security by implementing UNSC Resolution No. 2254.”

SOT, Hadi Albahra, Co-Chair representing opposition (Arabic): “Some parties still fancy to evade this resolution, others talk about recycling the regime or easing the sanctions. We think that after 10 and a half years of the Syrian tragedy, the history of the Syrian people’s struggle, and the Syrian revolution, this has dictated a self-dynamism for the quality and nature of the solution that might be sustainable, while all other solutions woill not achieve the sustainable stability and security.”
