Residents of the southern district of Hasakah city continue to leave for the safe areas in the city amid clashes and chaos surrounding the city’s prison which is controlled by SDF.

Locals were seen leaving Ghweran neighbourhood of Hasakah city amid continuing chaos around the prison, where blasts took place and a number of ISIS militants managed to escape.

According to media reports, ISIS attack on Ghweran prison killed 70 people, including 40 ISIS members

The area has seen sporadic clashes between SDF and ISIS cells, which claimed responsibility for exploding fuel tanks, a car and a motorcycle.

The anti-ISIS coalition targeted Al-Zuhour neighborhood with at least 4 missiles in an attempt to prevent ISIS militants, who used civilians as human shields, from further advancing.

Translation:

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “Around 30 members [of IS] were deployed between us and our house. I have seen this with my own eyes. They told me: if you speak, we will kill you and your family. They spoke in Iraqi dialect, they were Iraqis. They took our mobile phones and we later found them on the roof when they were ringing. I went up to the roof to see if they are still there and found out that the water tank was crooked; obviously they were sitting on it, before they moved to our neighbour’s and eventually to the Al-Khabour area. This is what exactly happened.”

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “They reportedly enter the houses and kill everyone who is a soldier or Kurdish, but I haven’t seen this with my own eyes. Meanwhile, the airstrikes are targeting them indiscriminately.”

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “They displaced us and left us nothing. What should I say? They forced people to leave their houses.”

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “We left with the kids, and this girl fell on the ground. We heard a voice asking us to leave the house. We were very afraid for the kids.”
