Syria: Locals flee for safety after attempted IS prison break in al-Hasakah

Dozens of Geweran locals were seen heading for safety on Friday after militants attacked an al-Hasakah prison, which is said to hold members of Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) affiliated prisoners.

Military officers were seen escorting civilians to safety.

Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who control the facility confirmed the attack and said they had thwarted a prison break in the ensuing chaos as inmates set fire to blankets and other objects in their dormitories.

According to SDF updates, IS attackers later fled to the nearby al-Zohour neighbourhood and hid in civilians’ houses.
