Syria: Dozens bid farewell to legendary singer Sabah Fakhri at funeral procession in Damascus

A funeral procession saw the coffin of the legendary Syrian and Arab world singer Sabah Fakhri carried from al-Shami Hospital in Damascus on Thursday after he passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.

Footage shows crowds of mourners, including members of the late singer’s family, ministers, and artists following the car that carried the coffin towards Umayyad Square in the centre of the capital.

“Today we are experiencing a great pain in Syria, a great loss, the wound is great, and we are crying today in Syria for the loss of this pyramid,” said Syrian musician Hadi Baqdunis.

The body of the late singer will be taken to his hometown Aleppo, where prayers will be held before burial.

Fakhri was famous for his singing of the traditional Aleppiana Qadud and the Andalusian Muwashshah. His artistic career later led him to take the stage of theaters in different countries of the world, including the Nobel Peace Hall in Stockholm, the Conference Palace in Paris, and Beethoven Hall in Bonn.

Fakhri previously set the record for continuous singing when he sang for 10 hours without interruption in 1968 in Caracas, Venezuela.

What comforts us is that Professor Sabah, who was a source of pride for Syria in his life and even after his departure, this is what keeps us inspired. We feel proud even after your departure.”

I don’t know what I can say, Sabah Fakhri is not an ordinary person, Sabah Fakhri is the Sanja (traditional musical instrument) of the Arabs, Sabah Fakhri is Mount Qasioun, Sabah Fakhri is the Citadel of Aleppo, Sabah Fakhri is an ambassador to the whole world.”

SOT, Hadi Baqdunis, Syrian musician (Arabic): “The legend of Sabah Fakhri will not be repeated, as he is one of the legends of Arab art, authentic and honest art. There are singers who, like Sabah Fakhri, have beautiful voices, but no artist will reach the level of this great pyramid.”
