UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen held talks with Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Damascus on Saturday in attempt to revive stalled talks on the country’s new constitution.

“We went through all the challenges that Syria is facing. We of course spent quite some time on the situation on the ground in the different areas. We discussed indeed the economic and humanitarian challenges here in Syria, the challenges when it comes to livelihoods and what we all can do to help to improve that situation,” Pedersen told journalists following the meeting.

The envoy also said that he hoped it would be “possible to call for a sixth round” of talks between the committee’s members.

The UN-backed constitutional committee, which was created in September 2019, is made up of 45 people, with 15 delegates each representing the opposition, civil society and the government of President Bashar Al-Assad.
