Tajikistan’s armed forces held a parade on the border with Afghanistan in the Panj and Mir Said Ali Hamadoni districts of the Khatlon province on Friday.

The event happened against the background of the escalating situation in Afghanistan as Taliban forces take large swathes of the country and NATO troops continue their withdrawal.

President Emomali Rahmon gave a speech at the parade stating that the protection of the border is important to safeguard not only Tajikistan, but also the CIS and the EU.

The parade was attended by over two thousand military personnel, including members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and mobilization reserves of the territorial defence zone. Military and engineering equipment was also on display.

The Taliban has reportedly seized control of several Afghan border crossings in recent weeks as the group makes rapid advances in the face of the withdrawal of US and other foreign troops. The Biden administration has announced that all US military forces will have left the country by September 11, ending an almost 20-year deployment.
