Three protesters were injured by rubber bullets at a protest sparked by Wednesday’s ruling in Thailand’s Constitutional court that will make it easier to prosecute pro-democracy protesters, in Bangkok on Sunday.
The hundreds of protesters also called for reform of the Thai royal system. Wednesday’s ruling stated that such calls amounted to an attempt to overthrow the monarchy.
Police can be heard firing what sounds like rubber bullets at protesters. At least one injured protester could be seen receiving urgent medical care.
Demonstrators destroyed models of the constitutional court and burned effigies of the judges that oversaw the ruling.
Protesters marched to the German embassy instead of the Thai palace as Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn is currently in Germany.
His previous stay in 2020 at a villa in Bavaria at the height of anti-government protests became a diplomatic issue for Germany, with foreign minister Heiko Maas insisting no Thai state business could take place on German soil.
Thailand has been ruled by a constitutional monarchy since 1932 but protesters claim recent rulings are bringing Thailand closer to an absolute monarchy.
