While thousands are fleeing Ukraine as Russia continues its invasion, some sought to return to their embattled homeland to fight on the frontline.

For weeks volunteers have joined former military personnel to learn how to handle weapons and administer first aid, with many now forced into action due to Russian advances.

As well as civilian volunteers, Ukrainian reservists have also been drafted while prisoners with military experience have been released to bolster the Ukrainian defence.
