Thousands of protesters rallied in Tunis on Sunday, to demand President Kais Saied reinstate parliament, after he took control in July.

Riot police were deployed to the parliament buildings and the Bardo palace, to prevent the protesters, who were chanting anti-Saied slogans, from reaching them. Some protesters attempted to pull away the metal barriers, with reinforcements arriving shortly afterwards as protesters continued.

Member of parliament Naima Al-Mansoori said protesters were “prevented from going to parliament here today. The number of security is more than the protesters.”

“We want the application of legitimacy and the constitution and the restoration of the country, the country of democracy and freedoms. We want to restore the constitutional legitimacy of our country,” she added.

President Saied dismissed Prime Minister Hisham Al-Mashishi and dissolved parliament in July, sparking both celebrations and protests in Tunis and across the country.
