Tunisia: Tunisian authorities bring 487 migrants rescued at sea to El Ketf port

The Tunisian Ministry of Defense rescued 487 migrants off the coast of Sfax, in the south of the country, and brought them to land, to El Ketf port.

According to a ministry statement, naval units from the Army of the Sea and the National Guard contributed to the rescue operation.

The Defense Ministry stated that 487 irregular migrants have been rescued, originating from Egypt, Bangladesh, Syria, Morocco, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Palestine, Ghana, Gambia, Pakistan, etc. Additionally, the Defense Ministry reported that ‘the migrants ranged between 3 and 42 years old, including 13 women and 93 children, and they were on a boat that ran aground off the coast of Kerkennah in the state of Sfax.’

“We spent a lot of money to emigrate to improve living conditions. We don’t want to go back to Libya because we will die there. We ask for help, please, either send us back to Egypt or deport us to Europe,” said a migrant from Egypt.

Migrants were transferred to the port of El Ketf, the only region willing to accommodate them, and a camp was set up by the International Organization for Migration and the Red Crescent. The overloaded vessel had departed from Libya and was heading to Italy when it entered Tunisian territorial waters.
