UAE: Country begins first-ever Friday work day

Visitors to the Dubai Financial Market on Friday reacted to the first-ever Friday work day in the country, as the decision to move the weekend to Saturday and Sunday came into effect.

“There is no problem with having work on Friday, as long as I can attend the Friday sermon and perform the prayer after the call to prayer, and then return to my work,” said one of the visitors, adding: “One needs a while to get used to it.”

Another said: “Change helps, because you were losing three days in a week, just waiting for an answer to come or to send. From that perspective the change will help to globally align with the financial markets, stock exchanges and some of the companies we work with.”

The recently proposed shortened workweek means new working hours for government employees, with Monday to Thursday workdays now starting at 7.30 am and ending at 3.30 pm and Friday working hours from 7.30 am to 12.00 pm.

The new weekend system came into effect on January 1, 2022.

Locally and culturally here, of course the Friday prayer is still very important. That’s why at our organisation we have an extended prayer for the lunch break for the ones who want to take time to pray after lunch, but the business needs to continue as usual. I just dropped my kids to school this morning, they will start having half a day off on Friday, which also means that the other benefits is also that you get more time with the family, because it will be like four and a half days (of work) a week now. This will help children and families spend more time with together.”
