The United Kingdom is offering Expo 2020 visitors a unique opportunity to participate in a collective AI-powered poetic message for all of humankind through its pavilion in Dubai on Monday.
Guests of the pavilion can contribute their own words to an advanced AI learning algorithm called GPT-2, which generates poetic couplets every minute. The algorithm bases the couplets on knowledge of 15,000 poems written by more than 100 British poets and the submitted words. The couplets are displayed via LED lights on the facade of the pavilion. The first word ‘dignity’, submitted to this algorithm, was entered by Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Co-operation and director general of Expo 2020.
Guests can also enjoy a soundscape recorded by multicultural choirs across the UK inside the pavilion.
The concept of a universal message was inspired by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Hawking’s final projects included the pursuit of a ‘breakthrough message’ from the world that could be sent to space in an effort to find or communicate with extraterrestrial intelligence.
The 35th World Fair kicked off under the theme ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’ in Dubai on October 1, 2021 and will run for six months until March 31, 2022. Expo 2020 Dubai has become the first world expo held in the Middle East. It is hosting 192 countries as well as international organisations and companies that present their ideas, innovations and technologies. The fair was delayed one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
