Protesters gathered outside the Cambridge Union, where Tzipi Hotovely, Israel’s ambassador to the UK, was due to speak, in Cambridge on Tuesday.

Protesters from student groups around the UK gathered outside the venue and waved flags and banged pots and pans as Hotovely entered and exited the Union.

Saleem Nusseibeh, one of the protesters, who is president of UCL’s Students for Justice in Palestine Society said, “It is upon us to demonstrate, to protest her speaking, her being normalised here especially in light of the recently published Amnesty report which has described, along with other reports before it, Israel as an apartheid regime.”

The event was also protested by an open letter, signed by more than 1,100 students, who stated that they did not wish Hotovely to attend.

Hotovely opposes Palestinian claims to the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. She was appointed Israel’s ambassador to the UK in June 2020.
