Members of the UK’s Afghan diaspora took to the streets of London, on Saturday, to protest the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and urge more support from the British government.
Protesters demanded swift help for those left in the country as they marched through central London starting at Marble Arch and ending the demonstration outside Parliament.
Participants could be seen waving giant Afghanistan flags, chanting ‘We want peace’ and holding banners and signs reading ‘Stop killing innocent Afghans’ and ‘Save Afghan women’.
“I want to stand for the women and children of Afghanistan in particular, who are most vulnerable and at risk to the Taliban. They are invaders and terrorists, and that’s what they should be referred to as. Women and children and other vulnerable groups including the Hazaras, the Shias, and other religious minorities are highest at risk. Based on the history of the Taliban, they are not here to do any good in our country. They are here to cause horrible events. We are here today to prevent that, not just of those in Afghanistan but Afghans across the world,” said one of the protesters.
The Taliban took over the country last week after a swift advance amid the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from the country. Coalition members have been rushing to evacuate remaining troops, diplomatic staff and thousands of refugees in the wake of the Taliban’s takeover.
