Winds of up to 148kmh (92mph ripped through western England on Friday, as Storm Eunice forced the island to a grinding halt.

Waves whipping the north Somerset coast of Clevedon and empty streets in Bristol could be seen.

Four people reportedly died on Friday, with over 200,000 homes left without power.

Major transport links, including the M48 Severn suspension bridge, connecting England and Wales, have been forced to shut.

The Metro Office issued “a red danger for life” weather warning, urging people to remain inside, with winds topping record gust speeds.

The new record, at 196kph (122mph), has been set in the Isle of White, up 6kmh (4mph), which was set in Cornwall in 1979.
