Ukraine: 'Contain the threat from Russia' – Zelensky on ‘Lublin Triangle’ goals

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the goal of the ‘Lublin Triangle’ was to “contain the threat from Russia” during a joint press conference following a trilateral meeting with President of Poland Andrzej Duda and President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda in Huta, Monday.

“Today we have coordinated steps in support of our European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation for the next year, 2022. Our common goal is to contain the threat, the threat from Russia, to protect Europe from Russia’s aggressive policies. Today, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania are at the forefront of this deterrence. More than anyone else, we understand how urgent is the need to consolidate common efforts,” he stated.

The Ukrainian president also said that all parties had proven the unity of their positions, assessments and approaches though the signing of a final declaration.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine and similar countries will become NATO members only if the alliance understands “that it is not NATO that strengthens such states, but such states that strengthen NATO.”

For his part, Polish President Andrzej Duda said he was against any political concessions to Russia. The Triangle should demand a ”serious step back from Russia, because only this position can prevent a conflict,” he added.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda outlined that Russia would face consequences if the county tried to “draw a new red line.”

On December 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during talks with US President Joe Biden that Moscow was interested in obtaining reliable guarantees ruling out an eastward expansion of NATO, in connection with the alliance’s attempts to “develop Ukrainian territory” near Russia’s borders.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that it had handed proposals of security guarantees to US Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried on December 15.
