NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged Russia to ‘to be transparent, reduce tensions and deescalate’ its alleged military buildup near the Ukrainian border, speaking at a conference with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Lithuania’s president Gitanas Nauseda in Vilnius on Sunday.

“We call on Russia to be transparent, reduce tensions, and to deescalate. NATO remains vigilant. We stand ready to defend all allies, and we will continue our partner Ukraine with practical and political support,” said Stoltenberg.

Nauseda also urged NATO to rethink its stance toward Belarus in Vilnius on Sunday over fears that the Belarussian military will integrate with Russia’s armed forces.

“NATO must adjust its strategic and tactical plans accordingly and be prepared for a possible response if the security situation deteriorates,” said Nauseda.

Ursula von der Leyen assured that NATO would stand by its allies.

“Lukashenko has failed in his bid to undermine EU unity and solidarity. We’re facing down his hybrid attack all together,” said von der Leyen.

Following the conference, Stoltenberg and Von der Leyen will continue on to Riga, Latvia, where the NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs will meet on November 30 and December 1.
