Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on international partners to condemn Russia’s alleged violation of the Minsk agreements during a press conference on Thursday in Kiev, following talks with his British counterpart, Liz Truss.
During the event, Kuleba told journalists about the shelling of Ukrainian territories over the past 24 hours. The minister is convinced that ‘shells came from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.’
“We have already appealed to all international partners to immediately condemn this serious violation of the Minsk agreements by Russia. A UN Security Council meeting in New York is about to begin, or perhaps has already begun, and this issue is also on the agenda. The key thing now is to state for the whole world that these shells came from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, which are under Russian control. Now Russian propaganda is trying to distort reality and blame Ukraine for the shelling, but we are convinced that they will not succeed,” he stated.
The diplomat also announced the creation of a trilateral format of cooperation between Ukraine, Poland and Great Britain. The text statement was published on the websites of the foreign ministries of the three countries.
Amid reports of an escalation in Donbas, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the situation in the region is ‘heating up.’
“Representatives of many Western countries and organizations, including NATO, have lately been carrying out, in essence, an open information aggression against our country and the real state of affairs,” the media quoted Peskov.
Agreements to resolve the conflict in Donbas were signed at a summit in Minsk in February 2015. However, the OSCE has recently reported an increase in ceasefire violations.
The latest report by the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination (OSCE) on February 15 stated that 24 ceasefire violations had been recorded in the Donetsk region, including five explosions.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “Of course, our conversation has started by discussing the latest escalation in the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas. You already know, of course, that the enemy shelled Ukrainian territories with heavy weapons, which are prohibited by the Minsk agreements. Civilian infrastructure in the village of Luhanska was damaged, and at least two people were injured. In Mariinka, one civilian and one soldier were wounded due to the shelling. In Troitskoye, the shooting involved a tank. Several other locations have also come under enemy fire, and as of 3:00 pm today (5:00 pm GMT), a total of 42 shellings had occurred. We have already appealed to all international partners to immediately condemn this serious violation of the Minsk agreements by Russia. A UN Security Council meeting in New York is about to begin, or perhaps has already begun, and this issue is also on the agenda. The key thing now is to state for the whole world that these shells came from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, which are under Russian control. Now Russian propaganda is trying to distort reality and blame Ukraine for the shelling, but we are convinced that they will not succeed.”
SOT, Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “Today I can state with an absolute calm that Ukraine has a reliable friend, Great Britain, not only by words but also by actions which speak for themselves. London has provided Ukraine with modern defence weapons, has shown its readiness to impose tough sanctions against Russia, and is conducting active global diplomacy to contain Russia.”
SOT, Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “Today we are happy to announce that Ukraine, Great Britain, and Poland are starting a new trilateral format of cooperation. Unfortunately, for logistical reasons, we cannot do this in threes. Our colleague [Polish Foreign Minister] Zbigniew Rau would be standing here, but he is with us remotely. We are announcing the creation of a trilateral Ukrainian-Polish-British alliance.”
