Ukraine: Kiev court postpones appeal hearing in Poroshenko's case

The Kiev Court of Appeal on Friday adjourned a hearing on the appeal of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko against restrictive measures ahead of his treason trial.

A judge announced the hearing was postponed due to the case files not being transferred from the Pechersky District Court for reasons “that do not depend on the panel of judges”. A new hearing has been scheduled for February 11.

Poroshenko addressed his supporters, some of whom were donning yellow-and-blue Ukraine flags and banners, outside the court building.

“I would like to thank all of you who gathered here today in order to continue our fight for Ukraine. I am talking neither about Poroshenko nor about our political power. I am talking about the ways to prevent the attempts of authorities to turn the country into Belarus, to turn Ukraine into Kazakhstan, and to form Ukraine as a Putin-like Russia. We didn’t let it happen earlier, we won’t let it happen now,” said Poroshenko.

Poroshenko faces treason charges over his alleged involvement in financing separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine via the illegal sale of coal during his time in office. The ex-president says the charges are politically motivated.
