Ukraine: Kiev residents celebrate "Unity Day" at Independence Square

Residents of Kiev gathered at Independence Square in Kiev on Wednesday to celebrate ‘Unity Day,’ a new public holiday called for by President Zelensky.
The city’s streets and squares were decorated with Ukrainian flags draped on the facades of buildings and lampposts, with one flying over Maidan.
During the celebration, local residents spoke regarding current tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
“Those people who are on the border and intelligence services can see better what is actually happening, whether [Russian] troops are being withdrawn or not. I don’t believe that something is being withdrawn, it’s some kind of incomprehensible pause,” said resident Alexei.
Resident Oksana meanwhile stated that she felt the situation had become calmer.
“He, President Putin, is probably starting to back away from his plans a little bit, I think so,” said Oksana.
Regarding the new national holiday, resident Andrei expressed enthusiasm at the chance for Ukrainians to unite.
“Lately in our information space [they are] talking about the war, about some difficulties, but here is a nice aspect, an opportunity to celebrate,” Andrei continued.
On Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky introduced the new holiday in a TV address to the nation, stating: “Let’s show the whole world our unity.”

Those people who are on the border and the intelligence service can see better what is actually happening, whether [Russian] troops are being withdrawn or not. SOT, Oksana, Local resident (Ukrainian): “I feel that the tension has decreased and I feel that there won’t be [a war]. He, President Putin, is probably starting to back away from his plans a little bit, I think so. Probably because our friends are helping us a lot. Friends with regard to this [situation]. I believe that there will not be this difficult circumstance.”

SOT, Andrey, Local resident (Ukrainian): “It’s much better when we have many national holidays that encourage us to unite. Because lately in our information space [they are] talking about the war, about some difficulties, but here is a nice aspect, an opportunity to celebrate.”

SOT, Andrey, Local resident (Ukrainian): “I don’t think tensions are decreasing, I think it would be more competent to ask this question to the intelligence officials who have some information. I think that even though there is a withdrawal of certain groups, an active phase of the war, a new escalation is very likely.”
