No other country has supported Ukraine financially to this degree as the Federal Republic of Germany. With over 2 billion US dollars (1.8 billion euros) we have managed to make the Ukrainian economy more resilient and independent from foreign influence and fostered its self-reliance and resilience.”

Therefore, I am happy to announce to you the accelerated disbursement of 150 million euros from the current credit, as well as a new unbound financial credit of 150 million euros on top. This is by the way embedded in the financial help of the EU Commission of an additional 1.2 billion euros, close to a quarter of that stems from Germany.”

The military activity at the Russian-Ukrainian border is not comprehensible for us. There are no reasonable grounds for such a military action. These activities, as well as the handling with the demands of Russia for security guarantees, were justifiably a central part of our conversation.”

SOT, Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor (German): “I am underlining here in Kiev once again that the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine are non-negotiable for Germany. We, therefore, expect from Russia clear steps towards the de-escalation of the current tensions. For the German government, it is clear that any further military aggression against Ukraine would lead to serious political, financial, and geostrategical consequences for Russia. That I will underline in Moscow tomorrow too.”

Therefore, it is slightly obstinate to observe how the Russian government brings something, which is practically not being discussed, to a level of major political controversy. Those are the challenges we are facing, that something which is not being treated, is being made an issue.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared that Ukraine’s membership in military alliances such as NATO were ‘not up for discussion’ during a press conference held with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday in Kiev.

“We agree on the concern about the current situation at the Russian-Ukrainian border. The military activity at the Russian-Ukrainian border is not comprehensible for us. There are no reasonable grounds for such a military action,” said Scholz, dismissing Russian demands for security guarantees.

“The memberships in alliances are practically not up for discussion,” Scholz continued.

The chancellor went on to state that it would be ‘obstinate’ for Russia to invade Ukraine based on a matter that is ‘not being discussed.’

Several countries have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine and issued travel warnings, citing concerns of potential armed conflict in the country.

In a published announcement on Saturday, following a call between Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden on the ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the White House warned that Biden was clear that a ‘further invasion of Ukraine’ by Russia would be responded to ‘decisively’ with ‘swift and severe costs’ for Moscow.

Russia has denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite concentrating some 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border.
