Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that February 16 is to be an official ‘Day of Unity’ in Ukraine, during an address to the nation on Monday.
“We are told that February 16 will be a day of attack. We will make it Unity Day. A decree to that effect has already been signed. On this day we will hang our national flags, wear blue and yellow ribbons and show our unity to the whole world,” he announced.
The Ukrainian leader also appealed to civil servants and members of parliament who have left, or are planning to leave, the country. Zelensky called on them ‘return to their homeland within 24 hours and stand with the Ukrainian army, diplomacy, and the people - shoulder to shoulder’.
“The people of Ukraine have entrusted you not only to govern the state, but also to defend it. It is your direct duty in this situation to be with us, with the Ukrainian people,” Zelensky said.
Several countries have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine and issued travel warnings, citing concerns of potential armed conflict in the country.
On Saturday, presidential aide Yury Ushakov said that the media were spreading ‘false information about Russian intentions’.
On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country’s leadership is ‘analyzing the information’ coming from partners and intelligence. The politician urged citizens not to panic, stressing that ‘there is no full-scale war in Ukraine today’.
