UN: Bolsonaro defends govt record on COVID, environment, corruption at UNGA

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro defended the environmental policy and the performance of the Brazilian economy under his administration as well as his approach to COVID-19 in front of the UN general assembly in New York City on Tuesday.
Bolsonaro said that his administration has been actively working on an environmental agenda to ‘eliminate’ the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and thereby contradicted accusations of the global community. “Human and financial resources, destined for the strengthening of environmental agencies, were doubled,” he said in his speech.
According to a report by a Brazilian institute tracking Amazon deforestation released in August, deforestation hit its highest yearly level in a decade between August 2020 and July 2021, with some 10,476 square kilometres (4,044 square miles) lost.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Brazilian government has been criticised for its handling of the health crisis including the denouncement of a mask requirement and social distancing on public places.
At the assembly, Bolsonaro defended the so-called ‘early treatment of COVID-19 through the use of drugs such as chloroquine and ivermectin, a method that was declared ineffective by scientists and spoke out against the introduction of a health passport.
“We support vaccination, however, our government has been against the health passport or any obligation related to vaccination,” he said.
He blamed the current economic situation in the country on the ongoing pandemic and the lockdowns enforced by the regional governments.
“I have always defended fighting the virus and unemployment simultaneously and with the same responsibility. Isolation and lockdown measures have left a legacy of inflation, particularly in foodstuffs around the world,” Bolsonaro stated in front of the Assembly.
Regarding the economic situation, he alleged that there has been no corruption since he took office in 2019.
Bolsonaro’s government was recently embroiled in a corruption scandal in which an official is alleged to have enriched himself through a contract for the Indian ‘Covaxin’ vaccine. The judiciary has started preliminary investigations of the irregularities.
