Iraqi President Barham Salih called for the formation of an international coalition to fight corruption, describing it as the “political economy of violence and terrorism” during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York City on Thursday.

“We renew our call to form an international coalition to fight corruption and recover looted funds, similar to the international coalition against terrorism, as terrorism can only be eradicated by ending corruption as the political economy of violence and terrorism, corruption and terrorism are interlinked and interdependent, and one perpetuates the other,” Salih said.

In his speech, Salih also touched on the issue of the early elections scheduled for October 10, describing them as “pivotal.”

“Restoring Iraqis’ confidence in the elections and ensuring broad participation for us now is a top priority,” Salih said, adding that “one of the reasons for the political tension in the country is due to the deficiencies and the lack of popular confidence in the previous electoral processes.”

SOT, Barham Salih, Iraqi President (Arabic): “Ladies and Gentlemen, the phenomenon of corruption threatens the security and stability of the whole world, and our country is facing the phenomenon of corruption because of the dangerous legacy of wars and conflicts that squandered many of our country’s resources and deprived the Iraqi people of it. Therefore, fighting corruption represents for Iraq today a national battle, and the country’s situation will not be fixed before winning it.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Barham Salih, Iraqi President (Arabic): “From this platform, I invite friends in the international community to help us detect and recover smuggled funds from Iraq, as this will be a decisive step in deterring corruption. We renew our call to form an international coalition to fight corruption and recover looted funds, similar to the international coalition against terrorism, as terrorism can only be eradicated by ending corruption as the political economy of violence and terrorism, corruption and terrorism are interlinked and interdependent, and one perpetuates the other.”

SOT, Barham Salih, Iraqi President (Arabic): “In this context, we note that the continuation of the Syrian crisis and its terrible humanitarian repercussions has become unacceptable, and we recall that dangerous hotbeds of terrorism are constantly active and live on the permanence of the crisis and threaten the Syrian people and threaten our country and the entire region, and it is time for a serious move to end the suffering of the Syrians, based on respect for their right to peace, freedom and the eradication of active terrorist hotbeds there.”

SOT, Barham Salih, Iraqi President (Arabic): “Next month, Iraq awaits a pivotal national entitlement represented by early elections, in response to a popular movement and a broad national consensus on the need for radical reforms and a new political and social contract that addresses the deficiencies in the system of governance and ensures good governance. They are fateful elections that will have consequences for Iraq and perhaps the entire region.”

SOT, Barham Salih, Iraqi President (Arabic): “Restoring Iraqis’ confidence in the elections and ensuring broad participation for us now is a top priority. A new election law that is more representative and equitable than earlier, and a new election commission has been approved, and the government has provided it with its needs to organise the voting, and the electoral code of conduct has been adopted in order to be the peaceful path to reform through parliament. And a government that is rightly based on the rule of the people without manipulation, as one of the reasons for the political tension in the country is due to the imbalances and the lack of popular confidence in the previous electoral processes.”
