Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted unanimously to extend the UN’s mission mandate in Afghanistan for six months, during a meeting in New York City, on Friday.

SOT, Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN (Russian): ” However, we regret that due to the position of certain members of Council, the final version of the resolution has not taken into account the objective evaluation of threats in Afghanistan, one represented by ISIL (ISIS) and long-term drug problems, still remaining as long-standing challenges not only for the country but the whole region and outside of it. We emphasise that mitigating these threats is the key to maintain stability and security in the country. Omitting or understating these problems is unacceptable.”
