The UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson stressed that ties between France and the UK were ‘indestructible’ during a press conference held as part of the UN’s Climate Week talks in New York City on Tuesday.
The statements of reassurance come at a time where France has cancelled upcoming defence talks with the UK. The political fallout has been caused by Australia’s decision to join the Aukus pact and cancel a multi-billion submarine deal with France.
“We’ll be talking to all our friends about how to to make the Aukus pact work so that it’s not exclusionary, it’s not divisive, and it really doesn’t have to be that way,” explained Johnson.
“This is just a way of the UK, the US and Australia sharing certain technologies, because that is the the sensible thing to do in the world in which we find ourselves,” added Johnson.
In his comments, Johnson also thanked a joint US-UK working group for achieving an agreement on travel restrictions, allowing for double vaccinated people in the UK to travel to the US for Thanksgiving in November.
The Aukus pact is a defence alliance between Britain, the US and Australia. As part of the agreement, the UK and the US will help Australia develop and deploy nuclear-powered submarines, in a move that has sparked condemnation from China.
