Joe Biden has claimed victory in the US presidential election after he and running mate Senator Kamala Harris clinched Pennsylvania.

A lengthy count due to record turnout and a high number of postal votes, meant the final result was delayed, with the winner announced in key states only once they had passed the threshold for a mandatory recount.

Donald Trump had announced a press conference in Pennsylvania but was photographed on a gold course in Virginia as news of Biden’s victory filtered through. His lawyer said a legal challenge would be mounted on Monday.
