Veronica Medero, a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, described her experience ahead of the 20th anniversary of the attacks. She was speaking near the Pentagon in Arlington.
“It feels like it was just a nightmare,” she remembered. “It’s just so horrible that you think you are in the middle of a nightmare, you just hoping you wake up.”
“You actually saw more people running towards the building than you saw people running away from it. That’s something hah always stuck to me. The amount of people that were willing to help and put themselves in harm’s way to help other people,” Medero added.
Medero spoke as the country prepares to mark two decades since the attacks in which four planes were hijacked, leading to the deaths of 2,996 people at the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Arlington and in Pennsylvania where the fourth flight crashed after passengers revolted.

SOT, Veronica Medero, 9/11 Pentagon attack survivor: “It feels like it was just a nightmare, you know, maybe you’ll just wake up. You are in the middle of seeing something it’s just so horrible that you think you are in the middle of a nightmare, you just hoping you wake up.”

SOT, Veronica Medero, 9/11 Pentagon attack survivor: “You actually saw more people running towards the building than you saw people running away from it. That’s something that always stuck to me. The amount of people that were willing to help and put themselves in harm’s way to help other people, you know, escape the chaos and get help. People that were physically hurt, get them to hospitals. Traffic you know of course was tied up so people had to go on private vehicles and take them to the hospital.”

SOT, Veronica Medero, 9/11 Pentagon attack survivor: “I saw it from the inside, you only saw little bits and pieces. You know, you didn’t see a lot of the offices that got burned up, they were, of course, closed off. The other thing that I remember too is, you know, they were using the centre of, you know, the Pentagon as a temporary morgue, so that was pretty horrible to see.”

SOT, Veronica Medero, 9/11 Pentagon attack survivor: “I have very mixed feelings about that. I think we were due to make a withdrawal at some point. I am not in agreement with how everything, you know, happened, I think it could have been planned better but I do think that it was something that needed to happen, because we have invested so much time, money , personnel training and things haven’t really changed all that much, unfortunately. And nobody expected Taliban to take over as quickly as they did, of course, but a lot of worry, I think, for a lot of us that were involved, you know, in the following years is that it can be followed up with something closer to home again.”

SOT, Veronica Medero, 9/11 Pentagon attack survivor: “So I would be interested in finding out a little bit more for the precursors of the attack and just become more educated as to everything else, because I think just being stuck in, how do you call it? How would you call it? Just having so many unknowns, I don’t think it’s fair. I don’t think its fair to survivors and responders that, you know, put so much on the line, you know, then and until now. I think they deserve to know as much as they possibly can.”
