USA: AMLO talks about global anti-poverty plan in UN speech

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador delivered a speech on the dangers of corruption at the UN headquarters in New York City on Tuesday.

Obrador said that “it would be hypocritical to ignore that the main problem of the planet is corruption in all its dimensions: political, moral, economic, legal, fiscal and financial.”

The Mexican president said that his country will propose to the United Nations General Assembly a World Plan for Fraternity and Well-being with the aim of “guaranteeing the right to a dignified life to 750 million people who survive on less than two dollars a day.”

Obrador’s visit is part of Mexico’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “I do not speak of security as a synonym for military might or as an argument for the use of force against anyone; instead, my approach is based on what was postulated by that titan of freedoms, according to Pablo Neruda, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt when the United Nations Organisation was created, it was with the right to a life free of fear, which remains the most solid foundation for security for all societies and states.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “The main obstacle to exercise of this right is corruption in all its expressions: transnational powers, opulence, and frivolity as ways of life for the elites, the neoliberal model, which socialises losses, privatises profits and encourages the plundering of natural resources and the assets of peoples and nations.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “We are in decadence because never before in the history of the world has so much wealth been accumulated in so few hands using influence and at the cost of the suffering of other people, privatising what belongs to everyone or what should not have an owner, adulterating the laws to legalise the immoral, distorting social values to make the abominable seem like an acceptable business.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “The most relevant body of the international community must wake up from its lethargy and emerge from its routine, from formalism, to reform and denounce, to fight corruption in the world, to fight against the inequality and social unrest that are rampant on the planet with more decision, more depth, with more protagonism, with more leadership.”
