New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced to the press on Monday that 17 people lost their lives in the five-alarm fire inside a Bronx building the previous day, calling it an ‘unspeakable tragedy.’
Authorities previously stated on Sunday that 19 people had perished in the blaze, including nine children. Adams announced the revised death toll, “We have 17 lost. Nine are adults, and eight are children. This is really an evolving crisis.”
The newly elected New York City Mayor also said that he had visited the schools where the children who passed in the fire attended. “Early this morning, I was joined by the chancellor. We visited every school in the area where the children, our young scholars, lost their lives.”
Daniel A. Nigro, the NYC Fire Department Commissioner, explained that they were confident of what ignited the blaze, “The fire started with a faulty electrical heater, a portable heater. The fire was contained to the hallway just outside this two-story apartment, but the smoke travelled throughout the building, and the smoke is what caused the deaths and the serious injuries.”
A total of 32 people were sent to hospitals with life-threatening conditions following the massive fire.

The council general of the Dominican Republic is here with us and his team. This is a global tragedy.”

That was embedded in my head as a child watching the commercials over and over again. We’re going to double down on that message. In my conversation with the chancellor this morning, we’re going to send out communications to all of our schools and state that we want our children to receive the same level of reinforcement.”

The fire was contained to the hallway just outside this two story apartment but the smoke traveled throughout the building and the smoke is what caused the deaths and the serious injuries. So, our fire marshals teams are here; they’ve been here, they’ve been examining the building, they’ve been examining video tape, they will do a complete investigation into how this occurred, why this occurred and we’re confident of that.”
