USA: Biden promises aid for those affected by Colorado wildfire

US President Joe Biden held a press conference in Louisville, Colorado, on Friday, discussing his administration’s response to recent wildfires in the state of Colorado, promising, among other things, relief for those affected by the disaster.

The press conference took place as Biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid a visit to parts of Colorado that were affected by the fires. The state was recently impacted by wildfires which forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. During the visit, the Bidens met with the families who were affected.

Biden said the area affected would classify as a “national disaster area” and stated relief would come to the area through “clearing all of the debris and putting people in a position to be able to rebuild if their insurance provides for it, additional help if their insurance doesn’t, and the kind of help they need in order to get re-settled.”

Nearly 1,000 homes have been destroyed as a result of the wildfires, which have been burning for several days in Boulder County, north of Denver.

More land has burned in the United States, from California up into Idaho, here in Colorado and parts of the South that make up the entire, in terms of total acreage, entire state of New Jersey has burned to the ground. Every single solitary square acre in New Jersey, that’s how much has burned and I can’t imagine what it’s like to be here in this neighbourhood and see winds whipping up to 100 miles an hour and see flames approaching.”

The head of FEMA is with me today, she has run this show in a way that I think most people who’ve been engaged in disasters would say is remarkable. We’re going to make sure that everything you need occurs including clearing all of the debris and putting people in a position to be able to rebuild if their insurance provides for it, additional help if their insurance doesn’t, and the kind of help they need in order to get re-settled. But folks a number of you have asked, as we’ve gone through the tables and met other people in your neighbourhood is ‘what do we do now?’ Well, hang on to one another. The way you’re going to get through this, as we’ve been through a few things ourselves, is to hang on to one another. You will get through this, you will get through this and be stronger for it. I know that my mother used to say that and I’d always get angry at her no matter what it was. No matter if something bad or something good will happen if you look hard enough for it, but hang on to one another. Find purpose in what you’ve been through and what you’re going to do.”

SOT, Joe Biden, President of the United States: “Because we had worked earlier we had gotten a particular satellite in the sky to be able to be focused on y’all and see through the smoke and know what was going on. Well the truth of the matter is the commitment began the day the fire started. We immediately mobilised the Federal Firefighting Equipment, satellite imagery, the Department of Defense and additional federal personnel to support the response. When a governor requested the expanded major disaster declaration we approved it right away, on New Year’s Eve and to help families directly we surged resource support for temporary housing, home repairs, for those who still had homes, and debris removal.”
