Former US President George W. Bush took aim at domestic extremism in his speech at the 9/11 anniversary ceremony near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

“Twenty years ago, we all found – in different ways, in different places, but all at the same moment – that our lives would be changed forever,” the former president told the crowd.

“When it comes to the unity of America, those days seem distant,” Bush said. “A malign force seems at work in our common life that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment,” he added, in the light of the US Capitol riot on January 6.

The ceremony was held where the United Flight 93 plane hijacked by terrorists crashed after failing to reach its intended target, the US Capitol Building.

The 9/11 terrorist attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
