The cathedral of Washington DC rang its bell 700 times to commemorate the 700,000 deaths caused by COVID-19 across the United States on Tuesday.

As the bell tolled, the footage captured the hundreds of thousands of white flags covering over 20 acres (8 hectares) of lawn in the National Mall park that are part of the exhibition, ‘In America: Remember’ by artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg.

Some of the flags had personal messages written on them, and others featured photos of the deceased person.

The exhibition honours the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic across the US. The threshold of 700,000 COVID deaths was surpassed on Tuesday, reaching a total of 724,728.

According to the latest figures provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 55 percent of US citizens received the COVID vaccine.
