The US death toll from Covid-19 has topped 500,000, according to John Hopkins University.

The White House hosted a moment of silence on Monday evening, attended by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Biden said: “Today, we mark a truly grim, heartbreaking milestone. 500,071 dead. That’s more Americans who have died in one year in this pandemic than in World War One, World War Two and the Vietnam War combined.”

The president ordered flags on all federal buildings to fly at half-mast. Washington National Cathedral also marked the death toll by ringing its bell 500 times.

The US confirmed its first case of coronavirus in the state of Washington last January.
