USA: Evacuated residents find shelter in Susanville as Dixie Fire stretches over nearby towns

Several evacuees from the Dixie Fire found shelter in Susanville, California, where they drove their vehicles and trailers filled with some of their belongings, as seen on Sunday.

“I unplugged everything I basically could except the refrigerator, and took a couple pots and pans, took two duffel bags, and some family things that are valuable,” said Jim, who was evacuated from Chester.

A few evacuated residents created a makeshift camp with tents in a tiny yard outside the shelter. While some have been there for weeks, others just had to leave their homes in last-minute evacuations.

” I waited until the very last minute until I heard the sounds and the horns, and I realised, well, it’s time to leave. I thought about staying, but I realised I would be a jeopardy to the people fighting the fire,” Jim added.

At least eight people were missing from the areas affected by Dixie Fire on Saturday. Five of the missing are residents of the old mining town of Greenville, where the flames have levelled most of its downtown area.
