A US journalist freed from military prison in Myanmar was seen hugging family members on Tuesday, after touching down at John F Kennedy airport, New York.
Danny Fenster, who had worked as managing director for news outlet Frontier Myanmar, was arrested in Yangon six months prior and was being held in a military prison.
On Friday, Fenster was sentenced by the country’s authorities to 11 years in prison for charges including incitement.
However, following a visit by former Governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson to the Myanmar on Monday, Fenster was released and allowed to return home.
“I’ve got so much gratitude right now for everything everyone’s done,” said Fenster in a press conference upon his arrival.
Richardson stated that Fenster’s release was down to a ‘collaborative effort,’ as well as four face-to-face meetings with Myanmar’s Commander-in-Chief General Min Aung Hlaing.
“This was a journalist doing his job. This is a journalist reporting on what was happening, and he shouldn’t be made to suffer,” Richardson continued.
