USA: Last incoming flight from Johannesburg arrives in Newark before travel ban

Travellers were seen arriving on the last flight from Johannesburg at Newark International Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, ahead of travel restrictions to curb the spread of a new coronavirus variant.

Starting on Monday, officials stated that President Joe Biden’s administration would ban travellers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Malawi.

The decision from the US government was announced after the World Health Organization stated that a new variant, labelled ‘Omicron’, could potentially be more contagious than previous ones.

“Everybody was trying to get the last flight back. This was a packed flight. There was a sense of relief. Everybody just wanted to come back home,” said Michael, one traveller who was able to get on board the last flight before the ban.
