USA: Presidential delegation safe following reports of shooting at Moise funeral

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that the US delegation were safe following reports of gunfire during the funeral of slain President Jovenel Moise, during a press briefing in Washington DC on Friday.

“Our delegation in Haiti, the presidential delegation is safe and accounted for in light of the reported shootings outside of the funeral. They’re on their way back to the United States,” Psaki confirmed, later sharing her and the administration’s concern about the unrest in the country.

The delegation, led by US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, was forced to end the trip early due to security concerns, though no one was injured.

Asked about the US role in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of troops on the ground, Psaki responded, “We will continue to provide support to the government in the form of humanitarian support, security support, training, and we will also continue to encourage them to take a leading role in defending and protecting their own people.”

On the topic of China, she denounced the sanctions imposed on American citizens and companies by Beijing as “the latest examples of how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society organisations as a way to send political signals and further illustrate the PRC’s deteriorating investment climate and rising political risk.”

“Beijing’s attempt to intimidate and bully internationally respected NGOs only demonstrate its further isolation from the world,” Psaki concluded.
