Afghan diaspora members living in the US and anti-Taliban protesters demanded sanctions against Pakistan, in a protest in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on Sunday.
Protesters could be seen waving Afghan flags and holding signs that read ‘Pakistan is sponsoring international terrorism. Sanction Pakistan’ and ‘Afghan lives matter. Stop the proxy war in Afghanistan’. In speeches, participants demanded refuge for Afghans and support from the international community and accused Pakistan of funding Taliban forces.
“US, open your borders, Canada, open your doors. There are millions of innocent Afghan people dying at the hands of the US, at the hands of the Taliban, at the hands of Pakistan. I want to see humanity from this world, I’m tired of hearing my family die. I’m tired of the lives we are living,” said Aadila, a protester, in an emotional speech.
“We are losing people every day in Afghanistan and nobody cares. We are here to raise our voice to the United States and the United Nations to stop killing Afghans. Our life should matter, just like everybody else. Just like Americans just like everybody else in this world, we should live in peace, we should live in prosperity. We don’t negotiate with terrorists,” another protester, Cameron, said.
The protest took place as Taliban forces advanced on Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, following the collapse of the government. Taliban fighters took over the presidential palace after the country’s President Ashraf Ghani fled to Tajikistan.
The Taliban initiated its offensive after the US and other NATO forces started to withdraw their troops and personnel from the country.
