Smoke formed a tornado-like vortex at a Burnsville, Alabama salvage yard on Monday after a giant fire continued burning for a second day.

The blaze at the National Salvage and Service Corporation facility broke out on Sunday, with the local fire department saying it believes that lightning may have started the fire.

Fire crews are reportedly letting the fire, which they say could continue for days, burn itself out.

The company uses the site to recycle old railway sleepers into industrial fuel, with the creosote-soaked sleepers being highly flammable.

No injuries were reported at the yard, which was closed and empty of employees when the fire broke out.

According to local media, a state health official has warned of the potential health hazards posed by the fire.

“There are a lot of materials considered hazardous in smoke from several different compounds to particulate matter. We urge anyone who may be affected to stay indoors,” Alabama Department of Public Health official John Guarisco was quoted as saying in the Montgomery Advertiser.
